What is Functional Fluency?

Functional Fluency is a model of human social behaviour associated with how we can communicate at our best, responding rather than reacting to situations.

The benefits of becoming functionally fluent:

  • It leads to more satisfying relationships both in personal and professional lives

  • Reduces stress

  • Inspires confidence in our leadership and parenting skills so that those in our care grow and flourish, learn and succeed

  • It offers a clear menu of positive behaviours to choose from, saving time and energy

  • It helps people to care for others without becoming worn out

  • It helps people to take care of themselves, putting clear boundaries in place and ensuring a healthy balance of work and play

Fluent Leadership, Parenting, Self-management

I use the Functional Fluency model with coaching and counselling clients, as well as with supervisors, parents, students, teachers and leaders. It offers a clear framework, identifying and focusing on effective ways of being in charge, both of self and others. This way of being in charge leads to people feeling empowered and confident, and to an increase in their self-esteem.

The model also identifies behaviours we can all slip into on a bad day, where we focus on the negative, nagging and criticising as well as mistaking wants for needs. It helps people recognise that, whilst in the short term such behaviours can achieve some results, the long term impact is of young people growing up disempowered, and unable to think for themselves and take responsibility for their actions.

What is TIFF?

TIFF is a psychometric, based on behaviour. If you want those in your care to thrive at life, Functional Fluency is an excellent model to get to know. Many people find that using TIFF, the associated personal development tool, is a great way to identify and optimise their strengths and to recognise specific behaviours they sometimes slip into on a bad day.

How does TIFF work?

TIFF involves doing an online questionnaire which takes around 20-30 minutes. A personalised profile is then generated and clients arrange a 1-1 collaborative feedback session with a licensed TIFF provider to discuss, with support and guidance for how to put it to use.

TIFF testimonials

Doing my TIFF felt like I was investing in myself and my children. It helped me identify old patterns of behaviour copied from my own parents and replace them with more effective ones. It has given me back my confidence as a parent. ... I’ve got loads more energy now for myself and my family.

Doing my TIFF profile was really helpful in supporting me in my transition from teacher to Head of Year. I was really worried about being perceived as bossy but I now feel much more confident about what effective leadership looks like. I feel much less stressed and waste less time beating myself up. I love the way TIFF focuses on the positive.
